What Constitutes Dangerous Driving in Alabama

According to Alabama law, dangerous driving is characterized by conscious or careless disregard for the safety or rights of other people or property.

This includes speeding under any circumstances. In most cases dangerous driving refers to driving at extreme speeds rather than at a speed worthy of an average traffic violation.

Penalties for Dangerous Driving in Alabama

First-time offenders face jail time of up to 90 days, and a fine that could cost almost $500.00. Any offense after the first carries a penalty of imprisonment for up to six months, and an equally hefty fine. The court may also forbid a driver convicted of driving dangerously to drive on public highways for up to six months, and may also suspend that driver’s license.

Causes of Dangerous Driving

There are many possible causes for driving dangerously. Foremost among these are the influence of alcohol or drugs – offenses which carry their own, even more serious penalties. Additionally a driver may be the victim of peer pressure, urged by other people in the car to drive more recklessly.

This does not excuse the driver, so it is critical that the presence of peer pressure not be used as a reason for dismissing the driver’s guilt. Road rage is another cause linked to dangerous driving, and this is as inexcusable as submitting to peer pressure.
